On the day

The Egyptian Museum stands on Tahrir Square in the heart of downtown Cairo — the historic museum opened in 1902, not the Grand Egyptian Museum at Giza. Inside is the world's greatest collection of pharaonic antiquities: the treasures of Tutankhamun including the solid-gold funerary mask, colossal royal statues, jewellery, sarcophagi and papyri across two floors. Walk straight in past the ticket-office queue, head for the Tutankhamun galleries first if you can, and allow two to three hours for the highlights. The Royal Mummies moved to the National Museum of Egyptian Civilisation in 2021 and are no longer shown here.
